Acer Aspire AS5251

Acer’s plans for Android haven’t been a secret, but we have to say that this little netbook, with just enough of Google’s mobile Operating System (OS) on it to seem pretty interesting, is quite the treat. It utilizes Microsoft’s Windows XP as the main OS, but then it has the ability to quick boot into Android. You’ll be able to achieve this with Acer’s configuration manager, which is pre-installed on the system.

The netbook itself features the standard 10.1-inch display. Inside, you’ll find Intel’s Atom N450 processor. You’ll also find 1GB of DDR2 DRAM, and a 160GB hard drive. Unfortunately, out of the box you’ll only get a 3-cell battery, but Acer will happily sell you a 6-cell model for an additional $95. There aren’t a lot more details to pass along, except for the price. At $375, it’s not necessarily a steal, but it won’t break the bank, either. There’s no word on official worldwide release, but that should change soon enough.

[via Yahoo! News]

Acer recently launched a dual boot version of the Acer Aspire One D255 netbook which runs both Windows and Google Android. And Sascha from Netbook News.de managed to pick one up in Taiwan recently. You can check out his unboxing and first look video after the break.

The netbook runs about $289 in Taiwain and comes with 1GB of memory, a 160GB hard drive, and Windows XP as well as Android.

In order to boot Google Android, you’ll need to first launch Windows and run a utility to configure the computer to boot Android. Once you do manage to get into Android, you’ll notice that Acer has configured the operating system to use a mouse cursor — something which most Android devices don’t need.

Acer also includes a tab in the Android home screen which you can press to exit Android and boot Windows XP.

You can check out Sascha’s unboxing video below to watch him get frustrated with the packaging and lament over the fact that he can’t read Chinese… oh yeah, he also takes a look at the hardware and software on the computer.

Starcraft Review

Filed under: starcraft review — Tags: — chrbling @ 4:29 am

Finally, after over a ten year wait, Starcraft II was finally released. The famed RTS series from Blizzard was first released in spring 1998 and the expansion Brood War was released later that same year.

For those who skipped the single player campaign in the previous games, they were missing out. The single player campaigns in Starcraft and Brood War were phenomenal and amongst the best sci-fi stories I recall in a video game series. They were definitely on par with the Mass Effect series. How does the single player campaign of Wings of Liberty pan out?

WARNING: There may be spoilers below if you have not played the original Starcraft or are unaware of the original Starcraft storyline.

Story

Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty follows the story of Jim Raynor. You're out to start a revolution against the Dominion, which is run by the Emperor Arcturus Mengsk. The story follows you and your troops as you build up resources necessary to mount your war, meet allies, and of course contend with threats from the Zerg and Protoss forces. While it isn't an Oscar worthy storyline, with a number of cliches within in, it's a well done story worthy of your time. Some games have cliche stories that are never capable of grabbing your attention, but there is enough intrigue and desire to figure out what will happen that you'll want to play the whole single-player campaign till the end. Several plot twists occur, and you will regularly guess about who you can and cannot trust along the way.

Compared to the original Starcraft, the story telling of Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty single-campaign story is much better. Instead of “video-chat” sessions between all major characters or in-game chats between little game sprites, you now have full-fledged in-engine cutscenes between campaign missions (and there are still great pre-rendered cutscenes too). Between campaigns, you'll have the opportunity to move around your ship and talk to various characters, watch Dominion television propaganda, talk with other members of your crew, and discuss items of interest with them. All of this together makes the characters and the Starcraft universe come to life. They just aren't little talking heads like they were in previous games. At several points, you'll get flashback scenes or pictures showing you what Sarah Kerrigan looked like before she turned into the Queen of Blades. It's sort of touching, as it puts a face on the Sarah Kerrigan that you never really saw in the first game.

While the storytelling is much better than its predecessor, the overall story feels unfulfilled and without closure. For those who aren't aware, Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty only follows the story of the Terrans (with a few side missions involving another race). Later sequels will give you single-player campaigns for the Zerg and the Protoss. If there is one gripe about the game's story, this is it. There are various teases to future storylines and future story arks, but by the end of the game, you feel that there is no real conclusion to the story. It's much like the Lord of the Rings movies. While there is a definite stopping point, and you feel you got your money's worth, you can't help put feel disappointed.

The Campaign

The single player campaign is much like the earlier Starcraft single players. You get a series of missions, increasingly more complex and introducing you to more units and structures along the way. Due to the fact you only play as the Terrans in this game, the introduction of units and structures is pretty slow. Returning players may feel the story and campaign aren't going anywhere, but new players may feel it offers a good balance.

The campaigns offer an interesting mix of fun and diverse missions. While there are your typical “destroy all the enemies” or “survive enemies” missions, there are some unique ones too. You'll find missions that have different conditions between night and day and environmental factors that can destroy structures.

One of the most interesting aspects of Starcraft II are the RPG-like elements they've added into the campaign. After a certain point, you can select the order in which you perform missions. In some cases, you'll have to choose how to complete a mission by choosing to help one side or another. The choice may affect what types of units are available to you for the remainder of the campaign. The branching paths don't deviate the story greatly, but it's a nice touch. You'll get different cutscenes depending on your choices. Don't worry if you want to see the cutscene and don't want to replay the entire game, a mission archive allows you to play the alternate path just see the cutscenes.

Accomplishing missions now also gives you credits or points that you can use for upgrades or the ability to hire mercenaries. You can upgrade specific abilities of units, enhance the strength/life of units, or enhance building structures. It offers an interesting set of branching paths to customize how you want to play the rest of the campaign. Unlike RPGs, you can't just grind your way to unlocking everything. In some cases, there are upgrades where you must choose one or the other, and that's how you'll proceed throughout the rest of the campaign.

Even with all these minor branching paths, the replayability of the game isn't enhanced that much. You may want to replay some missions to unlock achievements, but the desire to replay the entire campaign is limited. Including the branching paths, there are 29 missions in all to play, which is a healthy amount for this type of game.

Game-play

I won't go into the gameplay in that much depth, as it is much like the earlier entries in the series. To put it simply, it's an real-time strategy game. Your job is to collect resources (minerals and gas) and use those resources to construct buildings or units. You'll need to balance your desire for defense, offense, tech upgrades, and expanding to new locations when your current resources run out. There are some nice enhancements from the previous game. SCVs are more intelligent, they auto-repair nearby structures. Your control groups can carry more units now too. Many of the new units are fun to control and play with, especially the reapers, a marine-like unit that can hop from lower to higher ground with temporary flight.

Similar to Warcraft III, there are some “hero” like skills that certain units have. Again, not an incredible upgrade, but it's a nice fun addition. It makes some of the non-resource gathering missions a little more interesting.

Starcraft II also offers differing levels of difficult and varying achievements that can increase the replayability of each mission.

Graphics and Sound

Blizzard is known for making PC friendly video games that don't require the best tech on the market. The system requirements for Starcraft II were modest at best. Even though modest, you'll find some great graphics and sound. The in-game engine cutscenes are already Xbox 360 and PS3 quality on the medium level. The voice acting is stellar.

Overall

Overall, Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty is an excellent game for those interested in the single player aspects. The $60 price tag may be a bit high for this game if you are primarily interested in just the single-player campaign, so you may wish to wait for the price drop. The campaign is not particularly long. While you have an opportunity to do challenges and gain achievements, the replayability is rather limited. Unlike Starcraft or Brood War, it didn't feel as though there were any epic campaign missions. In both of the previous games, there were several missions that stood out as particularly exciting and challenging. You'd want to play those missions multiple times to see how you could beat it. Those campaigns may exist in the Starcraft II Zerg and Protoss campaigns instead.

Grade: 8.5/10.0

How to Get Girlfriend Back

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — chrbling @ 2:32 am

When guys that haven't much experience in the world of dating finally decide that they are going to try to get a girlfriend one of the last hurdles they have to get past is their fear. The fear I am writing of is not that nervous feeling you get when you are approaching and then talking to a woman though it can feel exactly the same. The fear I write of is a fear of failure. It is a feeling that lets doubt creep into your mind and lets momentary hesitation become inaction. You failed to get the girl? So what so much of how to get a girlfriend is failing. All is not lost with failure in fact much more is gained in information that you can use to analyze what mistakes you have been making.

You want to go out into the world and give it your best try and not just in meeting girls but in everything. You do not go out and fail intentionally but you accept that failure is opportunity that presents itself by shouting in your face. Ignoring your faults and you will never solve them the only way to do so is to confront them head on.

If you ask out the girl you have had your eye on and she says no to you advances how much does that really effect your dating life in the grand scheme of things? Not much. She is simply one of many. But in your failures with her what can you derive from them to make sure the same thing doesn't cause you to not succeed again? Were you too aggressive? Too weak? Too boring? Do you now see what you need to work on?

Your self-conscious feelings that everyone is watching you and that if you do not succeed with this one girl then you will be branded a loser for life. Now as an adult I don't remember many particulars about what was going on in the 7th grade. I vaguely remember the girls I failed trying to get or the girls that actually liked me. Looking back on it all now I don't get embarrassed or have regrets about how I blew it with whatever girl I had a thing for at the time, I see it as the learning experiences of adolescence. That is life, as time passes it won't matter that this girl didn't like you. What matters is that you tried and learned from your experience. What good is sitting back and thinking of what could have been? You may not be here tomorrow. What is funny about dating is that if you get rejected by a girl she may very well date you at a later point in time. It is all about improving yourself (How Do I Get a Girl to Like Me? It All Starts by Changing You).

If you want to get a girlfriend you have to take risks and part of taking risks is making mistakes. Remember you don't have to play perfectly to win the game.

Women's Watches

Unlike many other fashion accessories that you purchase without a second thought, a women's luxury watch is one that takes some thinking and serious shopping before making a commitment. Choosing the right luxury women's watch will provide you with a compliment to virtually any outfit, choosing the wrong one will leave you with watch that gathers more dust than praise. To that end, there are a couple things to keep in mind when choosing your next ladies watch.

First and foremost, you need to choose a material that you are going to get use out of, gold, white gold and silver are among the most common choices in ladies watches. Think about what metals most of your other jewelry is made of, what compliments your skin tone and factor that into your decision.

Second, think about the shape of the face and how it will look on your arm. A few of the most common styles include the standard oval, bracelet and rectangle or if you want to try something a little less common polygons, squares and horizontal layout watches might also make sense. The shape should represent you and your character.

Third, think about the brand itself as the brand of women's luxury watch you choose says a lot about you. Perhaps you like a timeless classic from the likes of Cartier, or perhaps a contemporary piece from the likes of a Movado. Or perhaps you prefer something a little more hip and trendy such as an ESQ. Regardless of the brand you decide on, realize what you wear says a lot about you.

Fourth and finally bring all the factors together and think about overall versatility. As we alluded to earlier you want to find a watch you are going to love and get a lifetime of use out of. To that end, don't just choose a watch you like, choose a watch you love. If it comes down to it, go to the mall and try a few of you favorites on and once you decide which one you like, go back online an buy that perfect women's luxury watch!

Bikes & Scooters

Exercise may be important for our health but with busy families, the high cost of gym memberships, the extra cost of childcare, and skyrocketing fuel costs for the drive to and from, families cutting back might decide to cut the workout. For families trying to cope with the extra stress of budget-tightening times, not exercising is not the right answer. Another approach: exercise together in ways that strengthen family relationships and get the heart pumping. Everything from stroller walking to exercise videos can be turned into a great family workout. The key is to meet everyone at their abilities and interest levels so they will stay involved or at least stay entertained while you get the workout you need.

Parents of young children often enjoy walking with the child in the stroller. If these walks are already a part of your routine, why not increase the workout by including squats, lunges, or knee lifts at regular intervals. This not only adds interest but strength training too. Check your area for stroller-exercise groups that meet to share an instructor and camaraderie during the walk. These walks can be great for getting started with a routine that includes your child, but once your child reaches toddler age they may not be content to stay in the stroller.

Parents of toddlers often find that chasing the youngster around feels like a workout itself. In fact, toddlers need time and space to develop their large motor skills: running, jumping, climbing, rolling. Your living room may not be ideal for this, so finding a safe, open space for you both is the key. Together with your toddler, develop a routine of simple activities. 1. Run up the hill 2. Jump up and down (Parent might include squat-jumps instead) 3. Skip or roll down the hill (parent might opt for lunges). Or perhaps your park's play equipment is bounded by a walking trail you can utilize while your busy tike climbs on the age appropriate structure. You both need to get moving each day, why not do it together.

Preschool and Primary-age children are often learning to ride bikes and scooters, providing a great opportunity for a family outing. Young children typically cannot keep up with an adult bike rider, but a parent will get a great workout walking to keep up with a child on a small bike or scooter. An area with sidewalks and gentle hills is ideal; kids will be willing to go much further if they get the occasional thrill of coasting downhill and walkers get a better workout with the climbs. Don't forget the helmets!

Elementary-age children are often interested in team sport activities. This can provide your family a chance to include some extra practice. The right equipment is helpful but a couple balls and some grass or the local school's blacktop after hours is all you really need to get started. Emphasize games or activities that include lots of movement: playing catch or “Horse” may increase skill and accuracy but those are not cardiovascular workouts. Instead, run around the courts, dribble and pass while moving, play a scrimmage game. Don't get caught up in “teaching” them. Instead keep it fun, active, and positive. You're here to get you both sweating, not to create the next pro-sports star! If your child is involved in local team sports, those practices and games often offer parents lots of hang-out time. Take a 20 minute walk before the game gets started or walk around the playing fields during the practice.

Another great way to workout and save money is with exercise videos. Every form of exercise has a readily available course on DVD or VHS and your local library probably has several. Many are targeted specifically for children. In fact, instead of beginning with adult level workouts, begin with these child-friendly workouts and include your kids of any age. You'll be amazed at how challenging they will be for adults as well. Some great ones to try are the Yoga Kids Series, Denise Austin's Kid's Exercise Videos, or videos targeting dancing, karate, or other kid activities. It may not feel like enough at first, but after doing some workouts together, your child might be interested in trying some of your own favorite exercise style on video.

Giving up the gym membership and the regular routine of a solo workout might feel like a big sacrifice at first. It can be challenging to keep a child interested in doing what you want to do. But trading in time away for more family time, teaching your child to value his or her body's health, and having fun together are benefits over and above the savings on your monthly budget. Your body does not require expensive equipment to break a sweat. Find something both you and your child will enjoy and make it a part of your week. You've never felt better.

Don’t waste your money! – Harold E. Gosse – Denver, CO United States
We purchased the Breville BCG450XL Ikon Conical Burr Grinder from Amazon on June 18, 2008 and were very pleased with its performance. I was about to write a positive product review. However, yesterday, March 29, 2009, the on/off switch (the one on the side and which is redundant to the one on the front) failed (fell apart in pieces actually) and the product is now useless.

On examination, the on of switch was so poorly designed with such non-durable materials that I am suprised it didn’t fail much sooner.

Needless to say, we didn’t get our money’s worth out of this product. Don’t waste your money!
